Character name: Dante (Human Rogue)

Backstory (WIP):

Dante grew up in a small town in the relative outskirts of their province, though the area is generally home to wealthy people. His mom is an inn keeper, and his dad is the local “prison warden” (or some high-ranking official that manages the prison)—two occupations that does not seem to suggest wealth, but Dante’s household has been relatively well off. The prison is the largest of the few nearby provinces, and it is infamous for having a lot of public executions take place there. These public executions are spectacles and attracts “audiences,” which often pays well for Dante’s mother as her inn is close to the execution site.

Dante, bored as a child he is, often attends these public executions. He slowly realizes that he can hear the cries of those executed right before they die, and, after some confused and terrified looks on their mother’s face, it seems that only he can hear those cries. As they grew older, they slowly start to understand what those cries meant, and he realized that a lot of these executions are not justified. He started showing sympathy towards the executed, with small arguments with his dad on the dinner table and visible distress during these public executions.

When Dante turned fourteen, his dad started getting fed up with his cowardliness and gave him his very first job: a prison guard position at the prison. Coincidentally, Dante is one of the guards who would lead those on the death row to the public execution “stages.” The cries became more grueling as now they were no longer distant and ignorable—they were happening right in front of him. Navigating through his part-time job in the prison, Dante slowly found that the reason for these unreasonable executions comes from an inherently corrupt prison and justice system that his dad is a part of, and the bribes of executions of business enemies or political opponents are what allows his family to keep their well-off lifestyle, not to say the generous tips from those wealthy enough to stay at their inn just to watch the frequent executions.

Two years working at the prison was two too many, so at his sixteenth Christmas morning, he left the house without saying a word to his parents. He know that he had to leave the place to return to it someday to … fix it. He only took his most important belongings and a small stack of cash in his parent’s wallet.

As Dante was staying at the outskirts of his province, still unsure of where exactly he would be going, he encountered Virgil. Dante was working a temporary job at the bar and overheard Virgil telling a story—it is the story of someone Dante knew, someone who was executed about a year ago. Dante confronted Virgil about this, and the two quickly learned each other’s strange abilities. They end up traveling together to large cities in nearby provinces, making a rather good pair for private investigation work, especially those related to murder—Virgil talks to the victim ghosts and finds out the truth, and Dante helps with navigating the complex prison & legal system.

[Maybe the way they meet the rest of the gang is because they were on another private investigation for something.]

Motivation:

Dante’s motivation is to at some day return to his hometown and stop the corrupt prison system from taking away more innocent lives. He doesn’t really know how he would do it, but he knows that staying in his town is not one of the ways, so he left to gain more experience and meet people who may be able to help him.
